Corydoras orphnopterus
Also known as: Widow-eye Cory, Napo Cory
Origin: Ecuador (Napo River basin)
Corydoras orphnopterus is a medium-sized cory from the Napo River basin in Ecuador, a major tributary of the upper Amazon. It gets the informal common name 'Widow-eye Cory' from a dark streak that runs through and behind the eye, giving it a solemn expression. The body is pale with fine brown mottling and scattered spots, and the caudal fin shows faint banding.
This species inhabits clear to slightly turbid streams with moderate current over sandy and fine gravel substrates. In the aquarium it appreciates similar conditions: moderate to good water flow, clean and well-oxygenated water, and a fine substrate with some decoration. It is a somewhat shy species that benefits greatly from tankmates and a secure, well-planted environment.
C. orphnopterus is rarely available but worth seeking out for the collector. It is undemanding once settled and peaceful with all suitable tankmates. Feed a varied diet and maintain excellent water quality for the best results.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 23–27°C; good oxygenation and water movement preferred. Tank: 80 L with fine sand, moderate flow, and plant/wood cover to provide shelter. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, and occasional live Daphnia. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; likely requires cool water change and live food conditioning. Compatibility: Peaceful; suits Amazonian community tanks with tetras, cichlids, and other peaceful catfish.
