Xiphophorus hellerii var.
Also known as: Wiesbaden Swordtail, Wiesbaden Red Swordtail
Origin: Captive bred (Wiesbaden, Germany)
The Wiesbaden Swordtail is a historic European show strain developed in the German city of Wiesbaden and refined over decades by dedicated hobbyists. It is characterised by rich body colouration — typically red or orange-red — with a clean, even elongation of the lower caudal ray forming the sword.
This strain is prized for its balanced proportions and reliable colour expression, meeting the exacting standards of European show judging. The Wiesbaden lineage has contributed genetics to many modern European swordtail strains.
A good choice for hobbyists interested in the history of livebearer breeding and those wishing to maintain a classic European strain as part of a conservation or breeding collection.
Water: 20–27 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; mineral hardness supports body colour and sword integrity. Tank: 100 L minimum; avoid aggressive or nippy tank mates that target the sword. Feeding: Quality flake, colour foods, frozen Artemia; 2–3 meals daily. Breeding: Livebearer; 20–100 fry per brood; strain breed for consistent quality. Compatibility: Generally peaceful; male–male competition manageable in larger tanks.
