Symphysodon haraldi (Abacaxis)
Also known as: Wild Abacaxis Blue Discus, Abacaxis Blue Discus
Origin: Wild-caught, Rio Abacaxis, Amazonas, Brazil
The Wild Abacaxis Blue Discus is the blue-form companion to the celebrated Abacaxis Heckel, collected from the same remote Rio Abacaxis drainage. Where the Heckel displays the three-bar pattern, this fish exhibits the horizontal blue banding of Symphysodon haraldi set against a rich brown-tan base, with the Abacaxis locality's characteristically vivid red eye.
Abacaxis Blue Discus are extremely rarely exported and represent a genuine collecting rarity. Their wild, unstocked provenance from an exceptionally remote Amazonian drainage makes them of both scientific and hobby interest to advanced discus collectors.
Care requirements are equivalent to those of Abacaxis Heckel fish: extreme blackwater conditions, very soft, warm, acidic water, and a live or frozen protein-based diet. These fish are for experts only.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft (0-4 dGH), KH 0-2; RO or peat-filtered water, tannin-rich. Tank: Minimum 300 L, blackwater biotope, dense driftwood, leaf litter, Indian almond leaves, dark substrate. Feeding: Live and frozen bloodworm, beefheart, artemia; dry food introduction requires weeks of patience. Breeding: Open spawner; very rare in captivity from this locality; blackwater conditions essential. Compatibility: Other wild discus of similar requirements; small blackwater tetras acceptable.
