Symphysodon aequifasciatus axelrodi (Abacaxis)
Also known as: Wild Abacaxis Brown Discus, Abacaxis Brown Discus
Origin: Wild-caught, Rio Abacaxis, Amazonas, Brazil
The Wild Abacaxis Brown Discus is the brown-form representative from the remote Rio Abacaxis drainage — a rarely fished tributary that produces discus with particularly clean, well-defined brown coloration and sporadic blue-green fin striping. The warm honey-to-chestnut body base is characteristic of the population, with vivid red eye rings providing the primary accent colour.
The Abacaxis locality is known for producing very high-quality wild discus with excellent body shape and depth, likely reflecting the pristine, undisturbed habitat. The brown form from this locality may be less visually spectacular than the Heckel or Blue variants, but in terms of body proportion and overall quality it frequently rivals them.
Care demands strict wild discus protocol. The remoteness of the collection locality makes these fish a significant investment, and appropriate care is both a practical and an ethical responsibility.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft (0-4 dGH), KH 0-2; pristine blackwater conditions. Tank: Minimum 300 L, blackwater biotope, Indian almond leaves, driftwood, minimal lighting, dark substrate. Feeding: Frozen bloodworm, beefheart, artemia; avoid dry foods initially; introduce gradually over 4-6 weeks. Breeding: Open spawner; very soft blackwater (pH 5.0-5.5, <2 dGH) recommended for spawning trigger. Compatibility: Wild discus groupings only; small blackwater tetras acceptable as companions.
