Symphysodon discus (Abacaxis)
Also known as: Wild Abacaxis Heckel Discus, Abacaxis Discus, Abacaxis Heckel
Origin: Wild-caught, Rio Abacaxis, Amazonas, Brazil
The Wild Abacaxis Heckel Discus comes from the Rio Abacaxis, a remote blackwater tributary of the lower Rio Madeira in Amazonas state — one of the most seldom-fished discus localities in the Amazon basin. Fish from this drainage display the classic Symphysodon discus three-bar Heckel pattern but with a particularly vivid blue-green body iridescence that distinguishes them from Rio Negro populations.
The remoteness of the Abacaxis ensures only small numbers reach the trade each season, making these fish genuinely scarce. Their blackwater habitat is among the most pristine in the Amazon, and fish from this locality are widely considered to represent the Heckel discus species at its very finest.
Only the most experienced discus specialists should attempt to keep these fish. The extreme water quality requirements are non-negotiable, and the cost of failure — both financial and ethical — is high.
Water: 28-32°C, pH 4.0-6.0, extremely soft (0-3 dGH), KH 0-1; RO or rain water with peat; near-zero mineral content. Tank: Minimum 300 L, dedicated species-only blackwater tank, Indian almond leaves, dark substrate, minimal light. Feeding: Live bloodworm, live artemia, beefheart; extreme patience required to transition to frozen foods. Breeding: Rarely achieved in captivity; requires sustained blackwater conditions and very stable parameters. Compatibility: Species-only; no exceptions for Abacaxis Heckel; incompatibility with other water types causes rapid decline.
