Symphysodon haraldi
Also known as: Wild Blue Discus, Blue Discus, Common Discus
Origin: Wild-caught, Central Amazon, Amazonas, Brazil
The Wild Blue Discus (Symphysodon haraldi) is one of the most widely distributed wild discus species, found across a broad range of the central Amazon basin. Its blue horizontal striping — extending from the dorsal region partway down the flanks — varies in density and saturation between individual fish and localities, making each specimen unique.
Wild Blue Discus require softer, warmer, more acidic conditions than most domestic strains, reflecting their blackwater and clearwater origins. Newly imported fish typically need a period of acclimatisation and may initially be shy and reluctant to feed; patience and a quiet environment are essential during establishment.
Once settled, Wild Blue Discus are rewarding fish that display naturally complex social behaviour within a group — hierarchies, courtship displays, and the biparental spawning care that makes discus uniquely fascinating among cichlids.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.0-6.5, soft (0-6 dGH), KH 0-3; blackwater style strongly preferred. Tank: Minimum 300 L, driftwood, leaf litter, low current, dim warm lighting, dark substrate. Feeding: Live and frozen bloodworm, beefheart, live artemia, quality discus pellets once acclimatised. Breeding: Open spawner on vertical surfaces; biparental fry care; requires very soft acidic water for reliable spawning. Compatibility: Wild discus only, or with small peaceful blackwater community species (cardinals, pencilfish).
