Symphysodon aequifasciatus axelrodi
Also known as: Wild Brown Discus, Brown Discus, Axelrod's Discus
Origin: Wild-caught, Upper Amazon (Peru/Colombia/Brazil)
The Wild Brown Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus axelrodi) is the most widely collected wild discus subspecies, found throughout the upper Amazon and its tributaries in Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. Its chestnut-brown to red-brown body base contrasts with blue-green striping primarily confined to the dorsal area and fins.
Wild Brown Discus are the most adaptable of the wild discus forms, tolerating a slightly wider range of water parameters than Heckel or Blue variants. This makes them a useful introduction to wild discus keeping before progressing to more demanding species. They remain strongly preferential to warm, soft, acidic conditions.
With their understated natural beauty, Wild Browns appeal strongly to biotope enthusiasts who value authenticity over the vivid colours of domestic strains.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft to moderately soft (0-8 dGH), KH 0-4. Tank: Minimum 300 L, Amazon biotope decor — driftwood, leaf litter, subdued warm lighting, dark substrate. Feeding: Frozen bloodworm, beefheart, live artemia, quality carnivore pellets once settled. Breeding: Open spawner; biparental care; softer more acidic water (pH 5.5-6.0) improves spawning success. Compatibility: Other wild discus or small peaceful Amazonian community fish; avoid hard-water species.
