Symphysodon discus
Origin: Wild caught
Symphysodon discus, the true Heckel Discus, is the most demanding and revered wild discus species, collected from the blackwater rivers of the Rio Negro basin characterised by the boldest first, fifth, and ninth vertical bars of any discus. Its stunning natural colouration and patterning are impossible to fully replicate in captive strains, making it the holy grail for serious discus purists in Belgium and the Netherlands. Requires the most extreme soft, acidic conditions of any commonly kept freshwater fish.
Demands extreme blackwater conditions: pH 4.5–6.0, GH 0–3, KH 0–1, TDS under 50 ppm using RO water, temperature 29–32°C. Perform daily 25–30% water changes with soft, temperature-matched water. Feed exclusively live or high-quality frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp nauplii, and beef heart mix initially. Wild Heckel Discus are more susceptible to stress and secondary infections than captive strains — expert-level husbandry is non-negotiable.
