Misgurnus anguillicaudatus
Also known as: Dojo Loach, Weather Loach, Oriental Weather Loach, Japanese Weather Loach
Origin: East Asia (China, Japan, Korea)
The Wild Dojo Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) is the natural, unpigmented wild type of the species, displaying the characteristic brownish to olive body with darker mottling and a pale underside. Native to East Asia — China, Japan, Korea, and neighbouring countries — it is one of the most widely kept coldwater loaches in the world and has a history of use as a food fish in parts of Asia.
The 'barometer fish' reputation of the dojo loach is earned: this species is exceptionally sensitive to changes in barometric pressure and becomes visibly excited — swimming rapidly and erratically — before weather changes. Beyond this charming behaviour, the wild dojo is an enthusiastic, sociable fish that becomes familiar with its keeper and feeds readily from the hand.
Care is robust and forgiving: cool to room-temperature water, fine substrate for burrowing, a varied diet, and a tight-fitting lid are the essentials. It integrates perfectly with goldfish, Carassius species, white cloud mountain minnows, and other temperate community fish. Its longevity and accessible care make it an enduring favourite in both garden ponds and indoor aquaria.
Water: pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 10–23°C; tolerates a broad range of conditions. Tank: 150 L minimum; deep fine sand, minimal or robust décor, secure lid. Feeding: Omnivorous — pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworm, vegetable matter; enthusiastic eater. Breeding: Spring spawning in ponds; not commonly bred in aquaria. Compatibility: Excellent with goldfish and all temperate community fish; avoid tiny companions.
