Poecilia latipinna
Also known as: Wild Green Sailfin Molly, Sailfin Molly, Green Sailfin Molly
Origin: Atlantic coast, North America / captive bred
The Wild Green Sailfin Molly is the closest aquarium-available form to the natural Poecilia latipinna found along the Atlantic coast of North America and Central America. Males develop an enormous dorsal fin with green iridescent colouration and attractive dark spotting, which is erected in a full display during courtship.
This species tolerates a wider temperature range than tropical mollies and can be maintained in temperate aquariums or even outdoor ponds in warmer climates during summer. In a spacious tank with good mineral content, males develop truly impressive fin development.
Wild-type mollies are generally hardier than heavily selectively bred commercial strains and are an excellent choice for hobbyists interested in keeping fish that represent the natural beauty of the species.
Water: 20–28 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, GH 12–25; light salt addition (1–2 g/L) beneficial but not mandatory. Tank: 200 L minimum; long tank with open swimming space for full sail-fin display. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina flake, quality flake; supplement with blanched vegetables. Breeding: Livebearer; 20–100 fry per brood; males develop full sail fin at 6–12 months. Compatibility: Peaceful with other species; males may compete with each other.
