Symphysodon discus × S. haraldi
Also known as: Wild Heckel Cross Discus, Heckel Cross Discus, Natural Hybrid Discus
Origin: Wild-caught, Rio Negro, Amazonas, Brazil
The Wild Heckel Cross Discus occurs naturally where the ranges of Symphysodon discus and S. haraldi overlap, primarily in sections of the middle Rio Negro drainage. These natural hybrids display a pattern intermediate between the two species — typically retaining one or two prominent dark bars (rather than the full three of a pure Heckel) combined with the broader blue striping characteristic of the Blue Discus.
Heckel Cross specimens are extremely rare in the trade and represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity for serious discus collectors. Each specimen is unique, as the expression of hybrid traits varies widely between individuals. The scientific interest in these fish — as natural bridges between two sympatric species — adds to their appeal.
Care requirements align with the stricter requirements of the Heckel parent: blackwater conditions, very soft and acidic water, high temperatures, and an exclusively live or frozen protein-based diet.
Water: 28-32°C, pH 4.5-6.0, extremely soft (0-5 dGH), KH 0-2; blackwater peat or RO essential. Tank: Minimum 300 L, blackwater biotope, dim lighting, heavy driftwood and leaf litter, dark substrate. Feeding: Predominantly live and frozen — bloodworm, beefheart, artemia, tubifex; dry food acceptance variable. Breeding: Reduced fertility possible in F1 crosses; breeding is rare and not reliably achievable in captivity. Compatibility: Wild discus specialists only; keep with wild-type discus; avoid domestic strains and hard-water fish.
