Wild India Zebrafish

The Wild India Zebrafish represents Danio rerio as it exists in its native range across the Ganges and Brahmaputra drainages of India and Bangladesh. Compared with the long-domesticated aquarium strains, wild-caught and wild-type bred fish are noticeably slimmer, with more muted but naturally proportioned horizontal blue-silver striping and no exaggerated finnage. They retain the full behavioural repertoire of wild fish, including more pronounced courtship displays and stronger shoaling cohesion.

This form is ideal for naturalistic South Asian biotope aquariums, pairing beautifully with other Ganges plain species such as small Puntius barbs, Indian glass perch, and hillstream loaches. Water conditions should replicate the variable subtropical streams of the subcontinent: moderate hardness, neutral pH, and temperatures that reflect seasonal variation.

Breeding is as straightforward as for domestic strains. This wild form is particularly interesting for breeders wishing to maintain or restore a more natural phenotype. Spawning over coarse gravel or fine plants is typical, with fry requiring only micro-foods from day three.

Water: 18–25 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; seasonal temperature variation beneficial. Tank: 60 L minimum; open swimming space with planted margins; natural biotope décor. Feeding: Omnivore; micro-pellets, crushed flake, Daphnia, baby brine shrimp. Breeding: Scatter-spawner over gravel or plants; very easy; fry straightforward to raise. Compatibility: Fully peaceful; classic South Asian community fish.
