Symphysodon haraldi (Marajó)
Also known as: Wild Marajó Blue Discus, Marajó Blue Discus, Marajo Blue Discus
Origin: Wild-caught, Ilha de Marajó, Pará, Brazil
The Wild Marajó Blue Discus is collected from the tidal blackwater channels and flooded forest habitats of Ilha de Marajó, the vast island at the mouth of the Amazon. Like the Marajó Brown and Green variants, the Marajó Blue is characterised by a noticeably broader, deeper body profile than upriver populations — a morphological trait that may reflect the richer food resources of the estuarine environment.
The blue horizontal striping in this population tends to be bold and regularly spaced, extending further down the flanks than in many other wild blue discus localities. Combined with the characteristic vivid red eye and the broader body, this makes Marajó Blue a visually striking and scientifically distinct locality form.
Care requirements broadly align with other wild discus but this population shows somewhat greater tolerance of variable conditions — likely reflecting tidal influence in its natural habitat.
Water: 27-30°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (0-7 dGH), KH 0-3; tannin-rich water enhances blue striping. Tank: Minimum 300 L, lower Amazon estuary biotope, driftwood, leaf litter, moderate warm lighting. Feeding: Frozen bloodworm, beefheart, artemia, quality carnivore pellets after acclimatisation. Breeding: Open spawner; biparental care; soft acidic water (pH 5.5-6.5) for spawning. Compatibility: Other wild discus; peaceful lower Amazon community fish acceptable.
