Symphysodon aequifasciatus (Marajó)
Also known as: Wild Marajó Green Discus, Marajó Discus, Marajo Green Discus
Origin: Wild-caught, Ilha de Marajó, Pará, Brazil
The Wild Marajó Green Discus is collected from the tidal and estuarine-influenced zones around Ilha de Marajó, the massive river island at the mouth of the Amazon. This unusual provenance gives the Marajó Green a distinctly different appearance from upriver populations — a broader, deeper body profile and a colour expression that tends toward warmer olive-green and amber tones.
Marajó fish inhabit a transitional zone between true Amazonian blackwater and the influence of the lower river, which means they are marginally more tolerant of slightly harder or less acidic conditions than interior Amazon discus — though soft, warm water remains essential.
Their unusual origin and body morphology make Marajó Greens a fascinating addition to a wild discus collection, representing an ecologically and geographically distinct population from all other commercially available discus.
Water: 27-30°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (0-7 dGH), KH 0-3; moderately tannin-rich water preferred. Tank: Minimum 300 L, Amazon estuary-style biotope, driftwood, leaf litter, subdued lighting. Feeding: Frozen bloodworm, beefheart, artemia, quality carnivore pellets once settled. Breeding: Open spawner; biparental; softer more acidic water recommended for spawning trigger. Compatibility: Wild discus groups or with peaceful lower Amazon community species.
