Astronotus ocellatus
Also known as: Wild Oscar, Natural Oscar
Origin: South America
Wild Oscars display the natural colouration of Astronotus ocellatus from Amazonian river systems — a mottled combination of olive, brown, and orange without the high saturation of captive-bred morphs. Sought by enthusiasts for their more natural appearance and robust genetics, they are equally interactive and long-lived.
Water: 23-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, tolerates a range of hardness. Tank: Minimum 400L, robust external canister filtration, minimal décor to prevent injury to fins. Feeding: Large cichlid pellets, prawns, earthworms, frozen fish; avoid feeder goldfish. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; pairs can be established in sufficiently large aquariums. Compatibility: Suitable with other large South American cichlids; avoid anything bite-sized.
