Symphysodon aequifasciatus (Tefé)
Also known as: Wild Tefé Green Discus, Tefé Green Discus
Origin: Wild-caught, Tefé, Amazonas, Brazil
The Wild Tefé Green Discus is the green-coloured counterpart to the celebrated Tefé Royal Blue, collected from the same Amazonas state locality. Tefé Green specimens are prized for their vivid, saturated green-to-turquoise body base that is richer and more complex than most other wild green discus localities.
Tefé Greens often display an unusual interplay between green body scaling and blue fin striping that creates a bicolour effect unique to this population. The red eye is particularly vivid and large relative to body size in the best specimens, adding a third colour accent to an already striking fish.
As with all Tefé locality fish, these discus command a significant premium and are suitable only for expert-level discus keepers with established blackwater aquaria and proven water quality management.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.0-6.5, very soft (0-5 dGH), KH 0-2; blackwater style with botanicals. Tank: Minimum 300 L, heavy driftwood, leaf litter, Indian almond leaves, very subdued warm lighting. Feeding: Frozen bloodworm, beefheart, live artemia, white mosquito larvae; gradually introduce quality pellets. Breeding: Open spawner; extremely demanding water quality requirements for reproductive success. Compatibility: Other wild discus; small blackwater-adapted tetras such as cardinal and neon acceptable.
