Symphysodon discus (Tefé)
Also known as: Wild Tefé Heckel Discus, Tefé Heckel Discus, Tefe Heckel
Origin: Wild-caught, Tefé, Amazonas, Brazil
The Wild Tefé Heckel Discus is widely considered the pinnacle of wild discus collecting. Combining the iconic three-bar Heckel patterning of Symphysodon discus with the extraordinary metallic-blue body iridescence for which the Tefé locality is famous, this fish is as close to perfection as wild discus get — and is priced accordingly.
Tefé Heckel Discus are vanishingly rare in the trade, appearing only when export quotas and collection conditions align favourably. Each specimen is unique in its expression of the Heckel bars against the blue body, and the quality of fish from this locality is universally acknowledged as exceptional.
Keeping these fish is a privilege that demands the highest level of discus expertise. Extreme blackwater conditions, impeccable nutrition, and a completely stress-free environment are mandatory. These fish should not be acquired without extensive prior experience with both wild discus and Heckel discus specifically.
Water: 28-32°C, pH 4.0-6.0, extremely soft (0-3 dGH), KH 0-1; RO or rainwater with pure peat. Tank: Minimum 300 L, species-only blackwater tank, Indian almond leaves, densest possible driftwood cover, near-dark. Feeding: Live bloodworm mandatory initially; gradually introduce frozen bloodworm, beefheart, artemia over weeks. Breeding: Exceptionally rare in captivity; requires years of establishment in stable blackwater conditions. Compatibility: Species-only strictly; any wrong companion or wrong chemistry accelerates decline.
