Apistogramma wilhelmi
Also known as: Wilhelm's Apisto, Wilhelmi Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Peru
Apistogramma wilhelmi is a recently described Peruvian species that has generated significant interest among Apistogramma collectors due to its combination of a broad, well-defined lateral stripe and vivid deep turquoise facial markings that distinguish it from closely related forms. It is named after the German cichlid researcher who contributed to its description.
The species inhabits soft, acidic streams in the Peruvian Amazon and requires careful blackwater management for optimal health and coloration. It is a somewhat demanding cave spawner that rewards experienced keepers with consistent, manageable breeding behavior once properly established.
A. wilhelmi occupies a useful niche in the collector's palette — distinctive enough in marking and coloration to stand apart from the more common Peruvian forms, yet accessible enough to be kept by a dedicated intermediate hobbyist.
Water: Soft, acidic — pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 25–28°C, low TDS. Tank: 80 L with caves, leaf litter, fine sand, and plant coverage. Feeding: Live/frozen invertebrates; quality pellets accepted. Breeding: Cave spawner; female broods exclusively; moderately challenging. Compatibility: Small peaceful tetras and pencilfish.
