Geophagus winemilleri
Also known as: Winemilleri Eartheater, Meta Eartheater
Origin: Venezuela (Meta, Apure)
Geophagus winemilleri is a medium-sized eartheater from the Meta and Apure river systems in Venezuela, named in honour of ichthyologist Kirk Winemiller. It presents an attractive pattern of dark vertical bars overlying a silver body with scattered blue-green iridescent scales. Dominant males adopt an enhanced colour display during breeding that elevates this species to a truly impressive aquarium subject.
Care requirements are typical of Orinoco eartheaters: soft to moderately hard acidic water, deep fine sand, and efficient biological filtration. The Meta system can experience significant seasonal temperature and pH variation, giving this species moderate tolerance of fluctuating conditions. Groups of five or more are ideal.
Geophagus winemilleri is a biparental mouthbrooder. Both parents participate in egg incubation and fry care, displaying the cooperative breeding behaviour characteristic of the genus. Captive breeding has been documented and is achievable in well-managed setups.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 6.0-7.2, soft to moderately hard (2-10 dGH); moderate seasonal variation tolerated. Tank: Minimum 250L; fine sand substrate, open swimming space, peripheral driftwood and rock arrangements. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp; live foods used pre-breeding. Breeding: Biparental mouthbrooder; bar pattern intensifies in spawning males; breed in group setting. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; combine with medium-large tetras, peaceful cichlids, and loricariids.
