About

Melanotaenia sp. 'Wissel Lakes' is an undescribed rainbowfish collected from the Wissel Lakes (Danau Tiga) complex in the central highlands of West Papua, a remote and biodiverse region at over 1700 metres elevation. The cool, clear, moderately hard waters of these high-altitude lakes have produced a rainbowfish with unusually vivid blue-green body colouration even by Melanotaenia standards, and males carry bright yellow-tipped dorsal and anal fins that create a visually striking frame around the body.

Because the species remains undescribed, limited information is available on its taxonomy and exact distribution. Specimens in the hobby are derived from a small number of collection events, and responsible breeding with accurate provenance records is essential to maintaining the genetic integrity of this rare form. Its high-altitude origin means it prefers slightly cooler temperatures than many New Guinean rainbowfish.

This is a species for the dedicated rainbowfish specialist — not demanding in care, but rare enough that each holder of this species contributes to a very small global captive population. The rewards are exceptional, as it is arguably one of the most beautiful undescribed Melanotaenia in the hobby.

Care Guide

Water: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 22–26°C (cooler than most relatives); moderately hard; consistent water quality essential. Tank: Minimum 150 L; planted aquarium; cooler temperatures reflect highland origin. Feeding: Quality flake, micro-pellets; live daphnia and brine shrimp regularly for best colour expression. Breeding: Egg scatterer on fine plants; maintain provenance records; cooler temperatures may inhibit spawning if too warm. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with other cool-water tolerant rainbowfish or calm community species.
