Danio wistulanus
Also known as: Wistulanus Danio, Salween Danio
Origin: Myanmar (Salween/Thanlwin drainage)
Danio wistulanus is a small danio native to the Salween (Thanlwin) river drainage in Myanmar, one of the region's major river systems flowing south into the Gulf of Martaban. It closely resembles other small Burmese danios but is distinguished by subtle differences in fin pigmentation and the arrangement of body markings. In the aquarium it requires the same care as other small danios: clean, well-oxygenated water, gentle to moderate current, fine sand or gravel substrate, and planted margins. It is peaceful, active, and schools tightly when kept in adequate numbers. Being rarely available in the trade, it is primarily encountered through specialist fish clubs, dedicated breeders, and importers focused on unusual Asian cyprinids. A genuinely interesting fish for those wishing to go beyond the mainstream danio offerings.
Water: Temperature 20–26 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–12; well-filtered, oxygenated water essential. Tank: 45 L minimum; gentle flow, fine substrate, planted edges; secure cover. Feeding: Flake, micro-pellet, frozen cyclops, daphnia, and baby brine shrimp. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; conditions and method similar to other small danios; rarely bred in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with small rasboras, tetras, and corydoras of similar size.
