Parachromis dovii
Also known as: Wolf Cichlid, Guapote Lagunero
Origin: Central America
Parachromis dovii is the largest cichlid native to Central America, reaching up to 70 cm in exceptional specimens. Found in large rivers and lakes of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, it is an apex piscivore in its native habitat. Its colouration shifts dramatically with age and mood, ranging from mottled grey and black to vivid yellow-gold with black spotting. This is an expert-only species requiring enormous tanks, robust filtration, and a solo or species-pair housing arrangement.
Water: 24–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard (GH 10–20). Tank: 1000L+ for adults; bare-bottom or sand; minimal decor as adults will rearrange everything. Feeding: Carnivore; large cichlid pellets, whole fish, earthworms, and large shrimp; feed 2–3x weekly. Behaviour: Extremely aggressive; must be housed alone or as a proven pair with ample space. Compatibility: Species-only; even established pairs can turn on each other — monitor closely.
