Hemiloricaria wolfi
Also known as: Wolf's Hemiloricaria, Upper Orinoco Whiptail
Origin: South America (Venezuela — upper Orinoco drainage)
Hemiloricaria wolfi is native to the upper Orinoco drainage in Venezuela, where it inhabits fast-flowing clearwater rivers with a strong current, high oxygen content, and primarily rocky or sandy substrates. The upper Orinoco is a nutrient-poor, highly oxygenated system and species adapted to it require conditions that differ markedly from slow-water Amazonian setups.
In the aquarium, Hemiloricaria wolfi demands strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen levels. A powerful external filter with spray bar delivery, or a dedicated powerhead directed across the substrate, is necessary to replicate its natural flow regime. Water temperatures should be maintained in the upper part of the typical tropical range and should not drop into the low 20s.
This species is best reserved for experienced hobbyists who can consistently maintain the required conditions. Its reward is a robust, active whiptail catfish that grazes openly during the day — something less common among bottom-dwelling loricariids — and will breed under appropriate conditions.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft to moderate (GH 2–10); strong flow and high oxygenation essential. Tank: 80 L minimum; smooth rocks and driftwood; powerful filtration with spray bar. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina, blanched courgette; actively grazes rocks and glass. Breeding: Presumed crevice or tube spawner under fast-flow conditions. Compatibility: Other fast-water Venezuelan species; avoid sluggish or very small tankmates.
