Mystus wolffii
Also known as: Wolff's Catfish, Giant Mystus, Borneo Mystus
Origin: Southeast Asia (Borneo, Sumatra, Malay Peninsula)
Mystus wolffii is among the most substantial members of its genus, reaching 60 cm and developing a noticeably deep, muscular body as it matures. It is native to large rivers of Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula — river systems characterised by high flow rates, warm temperatures, and often tea-stained blackwater conditions under forest canopy. Juvenile specimens show prominent spotting that fades to a more uniform dark pattern with age.
In the aquarium, M. wolffii requires a large tank with very good filtration and a hiding place large enough to accommodate a full-grown adult — a substantial length of wide PVC pipe or a large slate cave. It is intensely predatory and will consume any fish that can be overpowered, so tankmates must be chosen with extreme care. It can be aggressive toward its own kind unless raised together from juveniles.
Despite its demanding size requirements, M. wolffii is a rewarding fish — it has a strong personality, learns to recognise its keeper, and can become quite bold at feeding time. It is a genuine showpiece for the large-catfish specialist.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate to high flow; blackwater conditions (tannins) acceptable. Tank: 1 000 L minimum; very large caves; tannin-stained water recommended. Feeding: Whole fish, large prawns, earthworms; wean onto large meaty pellets. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Aggressive predator; only with fish of similar or larger size.
