About

Sinogastromyzon wui is a recognised species native to the fast-flowing hill streams of southern China. Its dorsal surface carries a dense mosaic of dark brown spots on a pale cream-to-tan background, arranged more randomly than the ordered rows of Pseudogastromyzon but slightly more regular than the reticulations of Beaufortia. The species was described in the mid-twentieth century and has been sporadically present in the trade ever since, typically available as a bycatch species alongside more popular Chinese hillstream imports.

Care requirements are standard for Chinese hillstream loaches: cool, well-oxygenated water with strong current, smooth substrate, and regular water changes. Like most members of its family, S. wui is sensitive to warm water and dissolved oxygen depletion, and any lapse in these parameters will quickly be reflected in the fish's activity level and colour intensity.

In groups, W's Sinogastromyzon is active and sociable, with individuals often grazing in proximity to one another on the same large flat stone. Light territorial interactions are normal and harmless. The species can be maintained alongside other Chinese hillstream loaches in the same biotope aquarium without difficulty.

Care Guide

Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–15, KH 2–8; strong flow and high dissolved oxygen essential; sensitive to temperature above 24°C. Tank: 80 L minimum; smooth flat rocks and rounded pebbles; minimal silt; strong directional flow along the substrate surface. Feeding: Biofilm and algae; supplement with spirulina wafers, algae discs, and blanched vegetables; avoid high-protein prepared foods. Breeding: Rarely bred in captivity; condition adults with cool water changes and increased flow; eggs deposited under flat smooth stones. Compatibility: Peaceful; compatible with other Chinese hillstream loaches and cool-water dither fish such as White Cloud Mountain Minnows.
