Pristella maxillaris
Also known as: X-Ray Tetra, Pristella Tetra, Golden Pristella Tetra, Water Goldfinch
Origin: South America (Orinoco, Amazon coastal rivers, Venezuela, Guyana)
Pristella maxillaris, the X-Ray Tetra or Pristella, is one of the few characins found in both freshwater and brackish coastal rivers of South America. Its translucent body is highlighted by bold black-and-yellow dorsal and anal fins, and a vivid caudal fin. It is notably hardy and adaptable, tolerating a wider range of water conditions than most tetras.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; tolerates slightly brackish water. Tank: 60 L minimum; works well in planted or lightly decorated community tanks. Feeding: Accepts flake, micro-pellets, and small frozen or live foods. Behaviour: Peaceful, active schooling species; groups of 8+ recommended. Compatibility: Ideal with other small peaceful tetras, livebearers, corydoras, and rasboras.
