Hypancistrus sp. xanthic (L076)
Also known as: Xanthic Flash Pleco, L076 Gold Flash, Gold Flash Pleco
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
The Xanthic Flash Pleco (L076) is an extraordinarily rare colour variant of the Flash Pleco group from the Rio Xingu, in which the normal dark-body-with-pale-stripe pattern is replaced by a vivid golden-yellow xanthic expression with only vestigial traces of the original stripe remaining. These animals are among the most prized loricariids in the specialist pleco-keeping hobby.
Care requirements mirror those of the normally pigmented Flash Pleco: pristine, warm, highly oxygenated Xingu-type water with very strong flow is essential. L076 is an omnivore that accepts algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, driftwood, and occasional protein supplements. The intense yellow colouration is best maintained by excellent water quality and a varied, nutritious diet.
Xanthic specimens command significant premium pricing and are best housed in a dedicated display aquarium where their extraordinary appearance can be fully appreciated. Semi-aggressive toward conspecifics, so keep as a solitary specimen. Active mid-water fish from the Xingu — such as larger tetras and flag cichlids — make ideal tankmates.
Water: pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 26–30°C, GH 2–8, KH 1–4; pristine Xingu conditions, strong flow. Tank: 150 L minimum; rocky decor, caves, canister filter plus powerhead. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched veg, driftwood, frozen protein. Breeding: Cave spawner; xanthic trait potentially heritable; very rarely achieved in captivity. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive with conspecifics; peaceful with mid-water community fish.
