Pterygoplichthys sp. xanthic (L020)
Also known as: Xanthic Pleco, L020 Pleco, Gold Morph Pleco
Origin: Rio Orinoco, Venezuela
The Xanthic Pleco L020 is a striking colour morph in which the normal dark pigmentation is partially or fully replaced by a yellow-gold xanthic expression. These individuals stand out dramatically from their normally patterned counterparts and are highly sought after by pleco collectors. The base species originates from the Orinoco drainage of Venezuela.
Care requirements mirror those of normally pigmented conspecifics. L020 is a herbivore that grazes on algae and biofilm, supplemented with blanched vegetables and algae-based sinking wafers. Driftwood is important both nutritionally and as shelter. Maintain excellent water quality with strong filtration and regular water changes to preserve the vivid xanthic colouration.
The Xanthic Pleco does well in a large, well-decorated aquarium with robust tankmates. It is peaceful toward most species but may show territorial behaviour toward other large suckermouth catfish. Its unusual colouration makes it a showpiece specimen in any display tank.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–29°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8; excellent water quality preserves colour. Tank: 250 L minimum; large driftwood, smooth caves, strong filtration. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina wafers, algae pellets, blanched vegetables, driftwood for grazing. Breeding: Cave spawner; xanthic trait may be heritable; dedicated breeding tanks required. Compatibility: Peaceful with most species; territorial toward large conspecifics.
