Xenagoniates bondi
Also known as: Xenagoniates Tetra, Bond's Tetra
Origin: South America (blackwater Amazon tributaries, Brazil)
Xenagoniates bondi is one of the most rarely seen Amazonian tetras in the hobby, originating from soft, acidic blackwater tributaries. Its body is largely transparent with a distinctive dark lateral blotch and fine melanophore speckling on the dorsal surface. It is a genuinely unusual-looking fish that generates significant interest among specialist collectors.
This species demands extreme blackwater conditions analogous to those required by Tucanoichthys or Axelrodia: ultra-soft, highly acidic water, heavy tannins, and stable, warm temperatures. Any compromise on these conditions leads to rapid health deterioration. It should be maintained in a dedicated species or near-species tank.
Feeding with fine micro-foods — baby brine shrimp nauplii, micro-pellets, and Cyclops nauplii — keeps this species healthy. Successful maintenance over the long term is a significant achievement for any blackwater specialist.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 4.5–6.5, ultra-soft (GH 0–5, KH 0–2); heavy tannins required. Tank: 60 L minimum; species or near-species blackwater tank; dark substrate, zero flow. Feeding: Baby brine shrimp nauplii, micro-pellets, Cyclops nauplii, nano powdered food. Breeding: Unreported in captivity; extreme blackwater conditions needed to attempt. Compatibility: Species-only or with equally tiny, peaceful blackwater specialists.
