Xenotaenia resolanae
Also known as: Xenotaenia, Resolana Goodeid
Origin: Jalisco, Mexico (captive bred)
Xenotaenia resolanae is one of the most visually spectacular goodeid livebearers, with males displaying brilliant orange-red finnage and an attractive spotted body pattern that intensifies under good conditions. Endemic to a small area of Jalisco, Mexico, this species is critically endangered and has been maintained in captivity through dedicated hobbyist conservation programmes.
The vivid colouration rivals that of many popular tropical fish and makes Xenotaenia resolanae a highly desirable aquarium species. It is active, personable, and shows interesting social behaviours within a species group.
Due to its conservation status, any purchase of this species should be from reputable captive breeders who maintain studbook records or participate in formal conservation programmes.
Water: 18–24 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18; cool, oxygen-rich water essential. Tank: 80 L minimum; planted species tank; good filtration and surface agitation. Feeding: Quality flake, live Daphnia, frozen Artemia, spirulina; varied diet enhances colour. Breeding: Goodeid; gestation 55–70 days; 5–20 fry per litter; remove to separate grow-out tank. Compatibility: Peaceful; species tank or goodeid community recommended.
