Xenotilapia bathyphila
Also known as: Deep-water Sand Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Xenotilapia bathyphila inhabits the deeper sandy zones of Lake Tanganyika, where its slender profile and subtle blue iridescence are adaptations for life close to the substrate. It sifts fine sand to extract benthic invertebrates, forming loose aggregations over open sandy flats at moderate depths.
This species is a biparental mouthbrooder — both male and female take turns orally incubating eggs and fry, a fascinating strategy observed clearly in the aquarium. Groups of six or more are recommended to ensure natural pairing and social behaviour.
X. bathyphila thrives in a sand-dominated aquarium with minimal rockwork, clean alkaline water, and gentle filtration that does not disturb the sand surface. It is a rewarding species for the dedicated Tanganyika sand-biotope specialist.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 8–16, KH 6–14; fine sand substrate; avoid coarse gravel. Tank: 200 L minimum; deep fine sand; minimal rock; open swimming area above substrate. Feeding: Fine sinking cichlid pellets; frozen Mysis and Daphnia; occasional live Artemia. Breeding: Biparental mouthbrooder; both parents alternate holding; fry released after 3–4 weeks. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other Xenotilapia, Enantiopus, and non-aggressive open-water Tanganyika species.
