Xenotilapia boulengeri
Also known as: Boulenger's Sand Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Xenotilapia boulengeri is a graceful, open-sand cichlid found across the sandy shallows of Lake Tanganyika, appreciated for its shoaling behaviour and the delicate blue iridescent sheen that males display during breeding condition. It is one of the more commonly available Xenotilapia species in the hobby.
This species is a biparental mouthbrooder, and groups of six or more are needed to ensure natural pairing behaviour. Spawning takes place directly on the sand surface, with eggs quickly transferred to the mouth of one or both parents.
X. boulengeri is more forgiving of aquarium conditions than some congeners and is often recommended as an entry point into Tanganyika sand cichlids. It combines well with other peaceful sand-floor species.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 8–16, KH 6–14; fine sand substrate mandatory. Tank: 200 L minimum; fine sand; minimal rockwork; good open swimming space. Feeding: Fine sinking pellets; frozen Mysis and Daphnia; live Artemia for conditioning. Breeding: Biparental mouthbrooder; pair bonds temporarily; fry released after 3–4 weeks. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal with other Xenotilapia, Cyprichromis, and Ophthalmotilapia.
