About

Xenotilapia flavipinnis inhabits the sandy transitional zones of Lake Tanganyika and is distinguishable from X. ochrogenys by its yellow fin colouration. It forms loose shoals and breeds via biparental mouthbrooding, an unusual system where both parents care for eggs and free-swimming fry. A peaceful and rewarding species for a well-planned Tanganyika biotope.

Care Guide

Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water. Tank: 150L+; deep fine sand; open water in the front third of the tank. Feeding: Sinking micropellet, crushed flake, brine shrimp nauplii; gentle feeder. Behaviour: Biparental mouthbrooding pairs; shoals peacefully outside spawning; tolerant community fish. Compatibility: Xenotilapia ochrogenys, Cyprichromis leptosoma, Callochromis macrops.
