Corydoras xinguensis
Also known as: Xingu Cory, Xingu River Cory
Origin: Brazil (Rio Xingu, Pará state)
Corydoras xinguensis is one of several remarkable catfish endemics of the Rio Xingu, a clear-water river in Pará state, Brazil, renowned as one of the most biodiverse river systems in the Amazon basin. This cory displays an intricate mosaic of fine brown spots and reticulation over a cream to pale golden body, with the patterning extending into the fins. It is a genuinely rare species in the hobby.
The Xingu is characterised by fast-flowing, highly oxygenated, warm, and soft water over rocky substrate — conditions rather different from the sandy, slow-water habitats of most cories. In the aquarium, C. xinguensis therefore benefits from slightly higher temperatures, strong oxygenation, and moderate water movement in addition to the usual fine substrate and soft-water requirements.
Because of its restricted range and limited availability, this species commands a premium price and is primarily of interest to advanced collectors. It requires stable, well-oxygenated water and consistent care. Never purchase single specimens; a group of at least six is needed for the fish to thrive.
Water: Soft and slightly acidic, pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 24–28°C; high oxygenation and moderate flow beneficial. Tank: 80 L minimum with fine sand, smooth rocks, and moderate to strong filtration for oxygenation. Feeding: High-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, and Mysis; regular varied feeding essential. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; presumed difficult; soft water and strong water movement may be triggers. Compatibility: Peaceful; best in a species tank or Xingu biotope with other Xingu endemics.
