Retroculus xinguensis
Also known as: Xinguensis Cichlid, Xingu Retroculus
Origin: Brazil (Rio Xingu, Iriri)
Retroculus xinguensis is endemic to the rocky rapids and fast-flowing stretches of the Rio Xingu and Rio Iriri in Pará state, Brazil. It is a robust, boldly barred cichlid whose dark vertical banding over a warm olive background makes it one of the most visually distinctive primitive cichlids available. Like its relative R. lapidifer, it tends and defends territories centred on smooth rock surfaces.
The Xingu is renowned for its extraordinary fish diversity and the extreme clarity and warmth of its waters. R. xinguensis requires similar conditions: very clean, well-oxygenated water with strong current, smooth rocky substrate, and consistent warm temperatures. Poor flow or deteriorating water quality will quickly stress this species.
Retroculus xinguensis is rarely exported due to restrictions on Xingu fish collection and is among the most prized rarities in the cichlid hobby. Captive breeding has been documented only sporadically. A true collector's species that represents the ancestral roots of the eartheater clade.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.2, soft to moderately hard (2-10 dGH); very high dissolved oxygen; powerful flow required. Tank: Minimum 350L; large smooth river rocks, minimal fine substrate; strong powerheads for current simulation. Feeding: Sinking cichlid pellets, frozen invertebrates, live bloodworm; forages on rock surfaces. Breeding: Open spawner on rock; biparental guarding documented; rarely achieved in home aquaria. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; best with other large rheophilic species; dominant males require space.
