Betta splendens
Also known as: Yellow Betta, Canary Betta, Butter Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
True yellow bettas are less common than the standard reds and blues, requiring selective breeding to eliminate iridescent cells that mask the yellow pigment. Well-bred specimens display a clean, vivid canary yellow from nose to tail tip with no colour breaks. Yellow bettas pair beautifully with dark-leaved plants in aquascaped setups.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — clean water prevents the yellow from looking washed out. Tank: minimum 20L, dark substrate and dark planting to contrast the bright yellow colouration. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp; two feedings daily. Behaviour: males aggressive to conspecifics — one per tank. Compatibility: peaceful community tanks; unusual and sought-after among betta enthusiasts.
