Blood Parrot hybrid (Amphilophus × Vieja)
Also known as: Yellow Blood Parrot, Yellow Parrot Cichlid, Golden Blood Parrot
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
The Yellow Blood Parrot is selected for reduced red pigmentation alongside enhanced yellow-gold tones, producing a fish with a bright lemon-yellow to deep golden body colour. This variant is particularly striking when kept alongside the standard red-orange or blue forms, as the contrasting colour creates a dynamic and vibrant display.
Yellow colouration in Blood Parrots is influenced by diet, with xanthophyll-rich foods such as marigold extract and certain algae-based foods helping to maintain and intensify the yellow tones. Foods high in astaxanthin will shift the colour toward orange, so dietary management is important for keepers who wish to preserve the yellow colouration.
All care parameters and temperament characteristics are identical to the standard Blood Parrot Cichlid, making the Yellow variant equally accessible to aquarists of all experience levels.
Water: 25–30°C, pH 6.5–7.5; regular water maintenance; avoid overfeeding which can lead to colour shifts. Tank: 200L minimum; community capable with appropriate tankmates. Feeding: Omnivore; xanthophyll-containing foods preserve yellow tones; quality cichlid pellets as the base diet. Breeding: Males typically infertile; females bond strongly with males and display parental behaviours. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; community suitable with medium-large robust fish.
