Ameiurus natalis
Also known as: Yellow Bullhead, Yellow Cat, White-whiskered Bullhead
Origin: Eastern and central United States
Ameiurus natalis is one of three closely related North American bullhead catfishes, distinguished from its cousins by pale yellow-white or cream-coloured chin barbels rather than the dark-pigmented ones of the Brown Bullhead. It inhabits weedy lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers and streams across the eastern and central United States, tolerating a broad range of water quality conditions including low oxygen and elevated temperatures.
In the aquarium, Yellow Bullheads are among the most interactive of the native catfishes. They are highly olfactory-driven, using their long barbels to navigate and locate food, and they quickly learn to associate the keeper with feeding time — surfacing to take food directly from the hand. They are active after dark and spend much of the day tucked into preferred shelter spots.
They grow to a substantial 40 cm and need large, well-filtered tanks as adults. They can be kept with other large robust natives that will not be intimidated by their competitive feeding behaviour, though smaller fish risk being consumed at night.
Water: 15–28 °C, pH 6.0–8.0, soft to hard; very tolerant — one of the hardiest native fish available. Tank: 400 L minimum for adults; large caves, driftwood shelters; substrate easy to burrow into. Feeding: Earthworms, frozen invertebrates, sinking pellets, cut fish; extremely food-motivated. Breeding: Cavity nester; both parents guard eggs and fry actively — clay pots or rock caves needed. Compatibility: Will consume small fish at night; keep with large robust species only.
