Congochromis sabinae
Also known as: Yellow Congochara Cichlid, Sabine's Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Africa (Congo River basin, Central Africa)

Congochromis sabinae is a small and attractive dwarf cichlid from the Congo River basin in Central Africa, belonging to a genus of cichlids endemic to the Congo drainage system. It features a warm yellow to orange-gold body base with iridescent blue-green scaling on the flanks and vivid coloration in the fins, making it one of the more colorful African dwarf cichlids.
This species occupies a similar ecological and behavioral niche to South American Apistogramma — it is a small, pair-forming cichlid that inhabits sheltered areas of streams and pools with soft, slightly acidic water, leaf litter, and dense vegetation. Males are larger and more colorful than females and establish small territories that they defend during spawning.
Congochromis sabinae is more peaceful than many African cichlids and is suitable for planted community aquariums, provided appropriate soft, slightly acidic water is maintained. It is best kept as a pair or small group in a species tank or with other small, peaceful fish that won't compete directly with them.
Like most African dwarf cichlids from the Congo basin, it requires more specific soft-water conditions than commonly available Rift Lake cichlids and benefits from the use of botanicals (leaf litter, driftwood) to achieve appropriate water chemistry.
Water Parameters: Soft, slightly acidic water: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–28°C, GH 1–10. Tannin-stained water from driftwood, Indian almond leaves, or peat filtration mimics their natural Congo stream habitat. Avoid hard, alkaline conditions.
Tank Setup: Minimum 80 liters for a pair or small group. Dense planting with fine-leafed plants, leaf litter, caves, and driftwood. A dark substrate with subdued lighting encourages natural behavior. Gentle sponge filtration is appropriate. Provide multiple cave options for territory establishment.
Feeding: Omnivores that accept quality cichlid micro pellets, fine flake food, frozen cyclops, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and small bloodworm. Live and frozen micro foods are especially appreciated. Feed twice daily in small amounts.
Tankmates: Compatible with small, peaceful fish that won't threaten their territory: small tetras, corydoras, small rasboras, and similar. Avoid larger, aggressive, or boisterous species. A species tank or carefully selected community is ideal.
Breeding: Cave spawners forming monogamous pairs. Females lay eggs in caves; both parents guard eggs and fry. Fry are tiny and require infusoria and micro-brine shrimp nauplii. Water quality must be pristine during breeding.
