Halichoeres chrysus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Halichoeres chrysus, the Yellow Coris Wrasse or Canary Wrasse, is a brilliantly golden-yellow fish adorned with a small dark dorsal spot. One of the hardiest and most adaptable wrasses in the marine hobby, it actively hunts flatworms, small bristleworms, and copepods, serving as a natural and effective pest controller in reef systems. Its hardy constitution and forgiving nature make it an excellent choice for intermediate marine keepers seeking a colourful and functional addition to their reef community.
Provide a minimum 150 L tank with a 5 cm deep fine sand bed for the burrow it uses as a sleeping spot. Feed frozen mysis, chopped seafood, and small meaty pellets twice daily. Maintain temperature 23–27°C, SG 1.020–1.025. Generally reef safe; may occasionally bother small ornamental shrimp. Ensure a tight-fitting lid — wrasses are persistent jumpers. Introduce early in tank setup as it may stress more timid species added later.
