Yellow-fin Apistogramma

Apistogramma flavipedunculata is among the more obscure members of the genus, described from the soft, acidic rivers of the Brazilian Amazon where it occupies highly oxygen-poor, tannin-rich backwaters. The species' most distinctive feature is the bright yellow coloration of the caudal peduncle and the base of the caudal fin, which contrasts vividly with the darker body in breeding males.

Rarely encountered in the hobby, A. flavipedunculata demands genuine blackwater conditions to display its best coloration and reproduce successfully. It is a delicate species that is easily stressed by poor water quality or incompatible tankmates.

Water: Ultra-soft blackwater — pH 4.5–6.0, temperature 25–29°C, very low TDS essential. Tank: 60 L; blackwater biotope with leaf litter, driftwood, and tannin-stained water. Feeding: Small live prey preferred; frozen Artemia and Daphnia; pellets accepted reluctantly. Breeding: Cave spawner; requires very soft water; fry vulnerable to hardness spikes. Compatibility: Only the most peaceful micro-fish; best kept as a species pair.
