About

Chalceus erythrurus, the Yellow-finned Chalceus, is the sister species to the more widely kept C. macrolepidotus and is distinguished by its distinctly golden-yellow to amber fin colouration rather than the pink-salmon tones of the Pink-tail Chalceus. It is a robust, powerful surface and mid-water characin native to the Amazon basin and the Guianas, growing to about 25 cm and displaying large, highly reflective scales that glitter impressively under aquarium lighting.

In the aquarium Chalceus erythrurus requires a minimum 500-litre setup — ideally longer rather than deep — as it is a powerful, fast open-water swimmer. The water should be soft to moderately hard and warm. A very tightly fitting and weighted lid is absolutely essential as this species is an extraordinary jumper capable of clearing large distances. It will consume any fish small enough to be swallowed.

Chalceus erythrurus is a predatory species best kept as a solo specimen or with a small group of its own kind in a very large display, or with other large, robust species. It is a spectacular fish for very large specialist aquariums and public displays, combining impressive size, reflective scale shimmer, and vivid yellow-gold fin colouration. Diet should consist of meaty foods, large pellets, and fresh fish supplements.

Care Guide

Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 5.5–7.5, 24–28°C; clean conditions; regular water changes. Tank: 500 L minimum; long tank preferred; weighted lid essential — exceptional jumper. Feeding: Carnivore/omnivore — large floating pellets, fresh fish, frozen prawns; jumps for surface prey. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; eats small fish; best with large robust species or own kind.
