Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Yellow Golden Snakeskin Discus, Golden Snakeskin Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Yellow Golden Snakeskin Discus is a technically accomplished domestic strain that layers the fine reticulated snakeskin pattern over a warm golden-yellow base, creating extraordinary visual complexity. The result is a fish that appears almost embossed — each scale defined within a network of fine golden lines.
This strain demands the standard discus care protocol: warm, soft, acidic water with excellent biological filtration and frequent partial water changes. The snakeskin pattern is most distinct in fish kept in optimal conditions with a nutritionally complete diet; stress or poor nutrition causes the reticulation to flatten and lose definition.
The Yellow Golden Snakeskin pairs beautifully with blue snakeskin variants in a mixed discus aquarium, the contrasting warm and cool palettes united by the shared snakeskin patterning.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; excellent biological filtration required. Tank: Minimum 250 L, moderate warm lighting that highlights snakeskin reticulation, driftwood, plants. Feeding: Carotenoid-enriched discus pellets, beefheart, bloodworm, brine shrimp for colour and pattern definition. Breeding: Open spawner; snakeskin pattern is heritable; selectively pair snakeskin to snakeskin for best results. Compatibility: Peaceful community discus; excellent with other snakeskin strains and peaceful Amazonian species.
