Pseudotropheus flavus
Also known as: Yellow Mbuna, Flavus Mbuna
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
The Yellow Mbuna is a relatively uncommon Pseudotropheus species with a uniform bright yellow colouration in both males and females, distinguishing it from the more commonly kept Electric Yellow Lab. Originating from the Nkhata Bay area of Lake Malawi, it is a rock-dwelling algae grazer with a somewhat less aggressive disposition than many of its relatives.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; regular water changes maintain vibrant colouration. Tank: Minimum 150L; rockwork with algae-covered surfaces and multiple hiding spots. Feeding: Spirulina-based pellets and algae wafers as primary diet; occasional frozen foods. Behaviour: Moderately territorial; less aggressive than many Pseudotropheus species. Compatibility: Mbuna community; combines well with blue or dark-coloured mbuna for visual contrast.
