Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Yellow Moscow Guppy, Moscow Yellow Guppy
Origin: Captive bred (Moscow lineage)
The Yellow Moscow Guppy belongs to the prestigious Moscow lineage, originally developed in Russia for full-body metallic colouration. Males display a rich golden-yellow hue from snout to tail, with the large delta or fan tail reinforcing the colour impact under aquarium lighting.
Moscow-type guppies generally carry stronger constitutions than many ultra-refined show strains, making them an excellent choice for hobbyists wanting show-quality fish without excessive fragility. They do best in hard, alkaline water that mimics the mineral-rich conditions of their farmed origin.
Keep at a ratio of at least two females per male; females of this strain carry subtle gold toning and are excellent breeding partners for maintaining colour fidelity.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; hard water intensifies metallic sheen. Tank: 60 L minimum; fine-leaved plants such as Cabomba provide fry cover; secure lid essential. Feeding: Colour-enhancing flake, spirulina wafers, frozen Daphnia and Cyclops; 2–3 small feedings daily. Breeding: Livebearer; broods of 20–60 fry every 4–6 weeks; separate fry for grow-out to preserve strain quality. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with similarly sized, non-aggressive species; avoid nippy barbs.
