Cryptoheros nanoluteus
Also known as: Yellow Nanoluteus Cichlid, Panama Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Cryptoheros nanoluteus is found in the lower Chagres and other Atlantic-draining rivers of Panama. Females are particularly notable for their vibrant yellow breeding colouration, earning the species its name which translates loosely to 'small yellow'. It is a cave-spawner that forms strong pair bonds and is an attentive parent. Its modest size makes it suitable for mid-sized aquariums.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15). Tank: 100L minimum; caves or PVC tubes required for spawning; fine gravel or sand substrate. Feeding: Omnivore; quality cichlid flakes and pellets with regular frozen food supplements. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; females are dominant at spawning time and intensely colour up in yellow. Compatibility: Works well with other small robust Central American cichlids or peaceful dither fish.
