Perca flavescens
Also known as: Yellow Perch, Lake Perch, Ringed Perch
Origin: Northern North America (Canada to northern United States, Great Lakes)
Perca flavescens is one of the most widespread and beloved freshwater fishes in North America, found from northern Canada south to the Carolinas and across the Great Lakes basin. Its bright golden-yellow body bisected by dark vertical bars makes it immediately recognisable, and in breeding condition males develop a warm orange flush on the lower fins. Yellow Perch are gregarious fish that naturally form large schools in open water.
In the aquarium, Yellow Perch require cool, well-oxygenated water and a spacious tank to display their natural schooling behaviour. A minimum group of five to six individuals allows the formation of a cohesive school and reduces stress on subordinate fish. They are highly active in mid-water and appreciate a tank long enough to accommodate sustained swimming.
They accept a wide range of meaty foods readily, including pellets, and are relatively undemanding compared to other cool-water predators. Their social nature, attractive colouration, and manageable temperament make them among the most rewarding native fish for large, cool-water community aquaria.
Water: 10–22 °C, pH 7.0–8.5, moderately hard, well-oxygenated; chilling may be necessary in summer. Tank: 400 L minimum; open water, fine gravel, scattered rocks and wood; avoid very warm setups. Feeding: Live/frozen invertebrates, small fish, worms; enthusiastically accepts quality pellets. Breeding: Broadcasts sticky egg ribbons over vegetation — easy to observe but difficult to raise. Compatibility: Schooling fish; keep in groups of 5+; avoid very small tankmates.
