Notropis chrosomus
Also known as: Yellow Rainbow Shiner, Alabama Rainbow Shiner (yellow form)
Origin: North America (southeastern USA highland streams)

The Yellow Rainbow Shiner is a color variant or closely related form to the Rainbow Shiner (Notropis chrosomus), a North American native cyprinid from highland streams of the southeastern United States. Males in breeding condition develop vivid yellow-gold fin coloration — distinct from the red-orange of typical Rainbow Shiners — combined with the same iridescent blue-green body flanks and silver base coloration.
Like the Rainbow Shiner, this species requires cool, well-oxygenated water and represents a temperate aquarium option for aquarists who want colorful native fish without tropical temperatures. It is an active schooling species best kept in groups of 6 or more, where males display their breeding colors and engage in courtship behavior that creates spectacular visual displays.
Yellow Rainbow Shiners are hardy and undemanding once their primary requirement of cool, highly oxygenated water is met. They prefer clean, clear water with moderate to strong current, mimicking their native highland stream habitat. A sandy substrate with smooth rocks and hardy aquatic plants creates an appropriate environment.
They are completely peaceful and compatible with other cool-water species. Their seasonal color changes and active schooling behavior make them a rewarding native species for dedicated temperate aquarium keepers.
Water Parameters: Cool water is essential: temperature 15–22°C, pH 6.8–7.8, GH 8–18. Avoid temperatures above 24°C. Excellent oxygenation via spray bar, powerhead, or air stones is critical. Mimics highland stream conditions.
Tank Setup: Minimum 75 liters for a school of 6. Sandy substrate with smooth river rocks and moderate to strong current. Open swimming space. Robust plants or algae-covered rocks. Tight-fitting lid for security. No heater needed in cool rooms.
Feeding: Omnivores accepting quality flake food, small pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Feed twice daily. Varied diet enhances their yellow breeding coloration.
Tankmates: Compatible with other cool-water peaceful fish: White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Rainbow Shiners, dace, and temperate gudgeons. Avoid tropical warm-water species. Keep in groups of 6+ for natural behavior.
Health: Hardy in appropriate cool conditions. High temperatures cause rapid immune suppression. Watch for ich and fin rot with temperature fluctuations. Regular 25% water changes maintain clean conditions.
