Macrognathus sp. 'yellow'
Also known as: Yellow Spiny Eel, Golden Spiny Eel
Origin: Thailand, Vietnam
This trade-name spiny eel from Thailand and Vietnam is characterised by a warm yellowish-brown base colouration with faint reticulations or light mottling across the body. Its exact taxonomic identity is unresolved and it may represent one or more undescribed species within Macrognathus; DNA barcoding of trade specimens would likely reveal significant diversity under this loose trade label.
For the aquarist, however, it presents as a peaceful and easy-to-manage small spiny eel with care requirements typical of the genus. It accepts a range of water conditions and feeding presents no difficulties: live and frozen bloodworm, tubifex, blackworm, and small earthworms are all eagerly consumed with sinking pellets accepted after acclimatisation.
Its warm colouration catches the light attractively in a well-lit planted aquarium, and its small maximum size of around 25 cm makes it suitable for aquariums that could not accommodate larger spiny eel species. It is peaceful and undemanding, making it suitable for beginner-level spiny eel keepers.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 3–12, KH 1–6. Tank: Minimum 80 L, fine sand, planted, hiding spots, sealed lid. Feeding: Carnivore; bloodworm, tubifex, blackworm, earthworms, and micro-pellets. Breeding: Not documented; assumed egg-scatterer. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium community fish; avoid nano fish and shrimp.
