Chromis xanthura
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Cocos-Keeling to Pitcairn Islands
Chromis xanthura is a larger Indo-Pacific chromis bearing a dark brownish-grey body that transitions dramatically to a brilliantly yellow caudal fin — a colour scheme that shimmers and catches the light as groups swim together over outer reef slopes. An active schooling species that adapts readily to aquarium conditions and adds a distinctive, eye-catching presence to reef displays as a contrast to the more commonly kept green and blue chromis varieties.
Keep in groups of at least 5 in a 150 L or larger reef system with open water above the rockwork. Feed a varied diet of small pellets, frozen mysis, and enriched brine shrimp twice daily. Maintain temperature 23–28°C, SG 1.020–1.025. Compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. The larger size of this chromis compared to typical reef chromis means it needs proportionally larger swimming space. Ensure a lid against jumping.
